Pitik Blog: Adventures Of An Accidental Chef

I saw a video of The Killers doing a cover of the Dire Straits Song Romeo and Juliet. I thought it was so sweet.

Anyway here it is:

A lovestruck Romeo, sings the streets of serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Find a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like, "You and me, babe, how about it?"

Juliet says, "Hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack"
He's underneath the window, she's singing
Hey, la, my boyfriend's back"
You shouldn't come around here, singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about it?

Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart
And I forget, I forget the movie song
When you gonna realize, it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes and the dream was just the same
And I dream your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me, as if I was just another one of your deals?

you can fall for chains of silver, you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin
Now you just say, "Oh, Romeo, yeah, you know
I used to have a scene with him"

Juliet, when we made love, you used to cry
I said, "I love you like the stars above, "I love you till I die"
And there's a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize, it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

I can't do the talk like the talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you
I Can't do anything except be in love with you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat, the bad company
And all I do is kiss you, through the bars of a rhyme
Juliet, I'd do the stars with you any time

Juliet, when we made love, you used to cry
I said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die"
And there's a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize, it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

A lovestruck Romeo, he sings the streets of serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Find a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
He says something like, "You and me, babe, how about it?"

I'm preparing an emergency kit for my household. I don't know if it's an over reaction. I really want to prepare kits - one for my house and one for my lola's. If past typhoons like Melenyo, Ondoy and Pepeng are any indication - the storms are getting stronger and more devastating. Obviously, this is due to climate change.

I read from Lessons From Ondoy that:

"Contrary to the President’s assertion, Ondoy is not a “once-in-a-lifetime” typhoon. Climatologists, like Dr. James Hansen of NASA Goddard Institute, have long warned governments that in the climate change era we are in, and unless swift action is made to bring down the level of Earth’s temperature to 350 parts per million through coal phase out and other measures, more and stronger ‘Ondoys’ will appear - uninvited, unwelcome, but inevitable - in the future. The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to its effects."

It is with this in mind that I have been reading up on how to make an effective emergency preparedness kit for our home. I stumbled upon the 72 hour Org which outlines a household plan, a survival kit for the family and a Go bag for each member of the family.

"A 72-Hour Kit is a personal kit containing essential supplies that should help a person survive for at least three days (72 hours) during a disaster. Experience has shown that it usually takes about three days before government and other institutions are able to provide rescue and relief efforts to disaster victims." - Are You Prepared? Inquirer

The 72 hour website has a lot of excellent suggestions. I've added a few items that I saw in Oxfam's relief efforts as well as during relief efforts in Marikina.

Emergency Preparedness Kit for home:
  • Food and Water for 3 days or more:
    • 1 gallon of water per day per person (for drinking, cooking, etc.)
    • Ready to eat food requiring minimal to no cooking (store familiar foods); rice and/or bread, cookies in single packs, packets of coffee/tea, sugar, salt (also good for rehydrating), candies, instant noodles and milk formula for infants, canned goods
    • Do not forget to bring food & water for your pets
  • Cooking and Feeding supplies:
    • Small pot/s and something to cook in (stove, burner, etc.) + fuel
    • Plates, utensils, drinking cups, etc.
  • Other Stuff (Equipment. tools, etc.)
    • First Aid Kit (list from Red Cross)
    • SHELTER: Tarp + Rope (or tent if you have one) + Plastic Sheeting for extra cover & blankets/banig/sleeping bags
    • COMMUNICATION: Fully Charged Cellphones and extra chargers
    • AM-FM Radio or a Rechargeable Light/Fan/AM-FM Radio In One
    • Heavy Work Gloves, Duct Tape, Extra Rope
    • MultiTool / utility knife, small shovel/axe/pick, hammer, crowbar, wrench
    • Mirror (for signaling rescuers)
    • Extra Candles & Matches in waterproof container
    • Large Flashlight and extra batteries
    • 2 way radio (if you have it)
    • Unscented Bleach and a small eyedropper for water purification
    • One 5 gallon bucket with lid* to store the emergency supplies & tools. Once emptied, this doubles as temporary CR when lined with garbage bags. Of course, I'm not getting a sosi port-a-potty. I'm just converting an old 5 gallon paint container. I just wanted to show you how it can look.
    • Hygiene Items: Soap, Alcohol, Wet Wipes, Toilet Paper
    • Extra bucket and dipper (balde at tabo) for washing up, etc.
    • Copy of important documents and phone nos.
    • ID cards and recent photos of all family members and pets
    • Emergency money (coins and cash in small denominations)
    • Map of your area
    • OPTIONAL: A ladder just in case you need to climb to higher ground (roof, etc)

    * Note: The Bucket for your emergency potty is very important. If you are stuck somewhere with out toilet facilities. This is the next best thing. Why? A lola from Provident village related how they had to crap on plastic bags. Needless to say - it was a hit or miss affair. They were stuck on the roof for 3 days.
Go Bag (Per Person) for Home: Store in back pack or in any easy to carry bag
  • Change of Clothes + sturdy shoes, flipflops or rubber boots
  • Rain Poncho + Warm Jacket + thin blanket or a beach towel (pick one that isn't bulky)
  • Small Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Personal First Aid Kit + Prescription medicines and special med. supplies or requirements (for asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.), Insect Repellent (off lotion, etc.)
  • List of Allergies (food and meds)
  • Extra prescription eyeglasses
  • Personal hygiene products - Toilet paper, alcohol, wet wipes, toothbrush and toothpaste
  • N95 Dust Mask
  • Whistle
  • Pocket Knife
  • Emergency Money
  • Extra keys to house and vehicle/s
  • Fully charged cellphone + extra charger
  • Special needs items for people with disabilities (My lola is visually impaired - so, for her I prepared an extra cane with whistle tied to it next to her bed!)
  • Special toys and comfort items for kids
  • Paper or notebook, permanent marker and tape
  • Books and other items to pass the time (playing cards, etc)
You can also prepare a smaller kit to carry with you everyday, to leave at your desk in your office or in your locker at school.

Remember, 3000 persons were stuck in UST during Ondoy's first day of onslaught. There were thousands more stuck in LRT and MRT stations as well as in malls all across Metro Manila.

Your Pets:
  • Have a Go Bag for your pets
  • Include: muzzle for your dog/s, extra leash & collar, pet food & water, feeding bowl, travel crate if available and any meds or supplies your pet might need
If you to be evacuated and have to leave your pet at home:
  • please do NOT tie your pet down (it might drown or choke on its chain); leave it free to roam
  • leave food and water (in bowls that won't tip over)
  • get an ID for your dog or if you can get your pet microchipped
Emergency Kit For Your Car:
  • 1 crate or box to put your supplies in
  • 1 small first aid kit
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Early Warning Device (reflective triangle)
  • Jumper cable and other tools
  • 1 gallon of clean water
  • Duct Tape + Plastic Sheet (for repairs)
  • emergency air in a can for flat tire (or a compressor)
  • Rain Poncho + Umbrella
  • Crackers, candies, etc. (esp. if you are diabetic)
  • Extra heavy duty plastic bags
  • Wee Bag (?)
  • Wet Wipes, Toilet Paper
  • And if you can, it's always good to have a full tank of gas just in case
I also have pillows and a blanket in the car. But that's because I like sleeping thru the Metro Manila traffic.

So attached to my laptop, my ipod, my cellphone, my digital cam and my other gadgets. Now, I even have my books in electronic form. Then, Ondoy and Pepeng came into the picture. No electricity means no gadgets. I had time to open my paperbacks and hard bound books again. Boredom does that to you.

With actual printed books, you don't need electricity. No batteries to charge, no hardware, no software. Just open, read and enjoy.

Thank you books for providing me with countless hours of pleasure. Now, if I prepare an emergency kit - I will surely include a good book.

I'm currently reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Pinoys seemed to have learned from the Ondoy typhoon. People are getting ready for the arrival of Pepeng. Neighbors have already climbed nearby coconut trees to ensure that no coconuts will fall on cars or worse on people's heads. Others prepared disaster preparedness kits.

Today, i shopped for groceries with my lola. Many people have the same thought - Hi-top supermarket was filled to the brim. We just bought basic stuff for three days like fish, some gulay, meat, hotdogs, bread, eggs, sugar coffee, milk and dried dilis/squid. I also got candles, instant noodles and ligo sardines for my tita monette's store in San Juan. Apparently, there are no more sardines and noodles in nearby supermarkets.

My water containers are already filled up. I have food for the family and for my dogs. All that's left is to wait for Pepeng to arrive. I hope that it would not be too bad. People are already suffering.

Eric, Louise and I went out in the rain and flood. We were galvanized into action due to flood waters in our own back yard. And ultimately, it breached our house. I went down stairs and stepped on water in my own house. EKKK!

I heard some folks are heading to church to seek shelter from the rains and flood. Not at our church, it's also flooded.

We called family to see if they are okay. Found out Mommy hasn't come home from morning mass. She's stranded in our flooded church. This hasn't happened in recent memory. So the amount of rainfall is too much. It's are really, really bad for flood water to get into our church.

So, we had to rescue mommy from a closed and flooded church. There were only two of them (and by them, i mean lolas). The priest wanted to take them home but they refused thinking the flood waters would decrease. Obviously, it did not.

After bringing mom home, we then went panic buying....... Ah not really. We just bought mops, detergents and bleach. Oh and candles, just in case. And some groceries.... okay, fine, a week's worth of groceries. Pero NO, di kami nag panic buying. :P

While out and about, we saw a lot of people just walking (namamasyal) around all wet - including our parish priest. I think he was checking out the barangay. If people are okay. A lot of kids are swimming in the dirty flood water.

Pinoys are kinda funny that way. We still try to enjoy ourselves even when we are hit with stuff like flood. I also saw a lot of volunteers just in the middle of the street telling folks in cars if it's okay to proceed or if there are flood waters. Pinoys are helpful people. :)

I was thinking where I've seen True Blood's Isabel (played by Valerie Cruz). Now, I realize she used to play Murphy from the TV series Dresden Files.

Been busy trailing after Joan as Chef Instructor for MIHCA’s Baking and Pastry (B&P) Arts program. I will be her replacement while she goes on maternity leave.

I took over Jo’s class today as she was indisposed. The class and I made the dessert for the Makati campus graduation. I’m very glad that the Napoleons turned out great. Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures yet. But they are really, really cute and yummy too.

This coming week, I will be teaching the B&P class Quick Breads, cookies, etc. I think that would be fun. It'll be a snap after making croissants, danish pastries and puff pastries (tart tatin, vol au vents, turnovers) this week.

My students are very nice. It’s great teaching them. They are all hard working. I hope that they will also do well with Chef Nap and Chef Pixie. (B&P classes are taught by several chef instructors). I know I will miss them once they move to the Manila campus.

Meanwhile, I'll stay behind at the Makati campus to teach Baking and Pastry to Batch 4 culinary arts students. I hope they are as easy to teach as this B&P class and the last CA batch that Joan and I taught.
